Iloilo City – The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) 6 hosted two sessions of Gender Sensitivity Training on April 24-25, 2025, aimed at enhancing the understanding of DA-BFAR 6 personnel, both technical and non-technical, on gender concepts, Gender and Development (GAD) issues, and the roles and responsibilities of both men and women. The training focused on promoting gender equality, inclusion, and the creation of a more equitable society and workplace. DA-BFAR 6 Regional Director, Remia A. Aparri, set the tone for the discussions and emphasized the importance of integrating gender perspectives into the agency’s programs and policies. “Gender sensitivity is not about giving men and women the same heavy load—it’s about understanding that they face different realities, expectations, and barriers, especially in the sector we serve,” RD Aparri said. Ms. Ira G. Pahila, Senior Economic Specialist from the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development 6, conducted in-depth lectures covering key topics such as the Basic Concepts of Sex, Gender, and Sexuality; Gender Roles; Gender Issues; and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belongingness. The training also featured a workshop on GAD Mainstreaming and Commitment Setting at the Workplace. During this session, participants collaborated to develop strategies and initiatives that can be implemented by the Bureau to strengthen its advocacy for gender equality in the region. Ms. Jessica C. Esmao, Chief of the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division, highlighted the significance of the training for the successful implementation of the Bureau’s projects and programs. “This training enables us to better understand the needs of our clients and our colleagues, helping us to work more harmoniously and effectively deliver our services as a bureau,” Ms. Esmao emphasized.
