As part of the social preparation component of the SAAD Phase 2 Program, the DA-BFAR 6, in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Concepcion, Iloilo, conducted a comprehensive Values Re-orientation and Leadership Skills Orientation for ring net or Sinsuro operators in Concepcion, Iloilo on June 4-5, 2024.

Members of the Bagong Samahan Fisherfolk Association (BSFA), a partner association of the Bureau’s SAAD Program, participated in the activity. During the workshop, the association underwent a beneficiary needs assessment (BNA) and organized their set of officers. The participants also engaged in discussions regarding their respective internal policies and were introduced to the concept of sustainable fisheries resource management.

Mr. Dindo Navarro, president of BSFA, expressed their willingness to adopt sustainable fishing practices and serve as a valuable member of their newly established association.

“Gapromisa gid kami nga magakooperar kung ano man ang mas ika-maayo kag salamat sa inyo proyekto nga ginhatag saamon,” said Mr. Navarro.

These workshops laid a solid foundation for the association, ensuring their personal values align with their association’s core values and equipping them with the necessary skills to lead, manage conflicts, and improve overall capacity of the association to manage the project.

Additionally, the association discussed the pressing issues related to the use of fine-mesh nets and how they can contribute to finding a solution, considering both the ecological impact of fine-meshed net fishing and the livelihood concerns of local fisherfolk.

Sinsuro fishing has been a persistent problem in the area due to its active gear and the use of fine mesh nets. Collaborative efforts between DA-BFAR, LGU Concepcion, Provincial LGU of Iloilo, the academe, and the local fishing community are vital for implementing sustainable fishing practices and safeguarding marine resources for future generations. ###/KLobredo, JFigueroa
